There's been days in the studio where I've had friends sitting with me performing the same simple movement very slowly until I figure out how to animate it. It's funnier when you find recordings of these things on your laptop and decide to make a video from it. So here it is "A Really Silly Making Of"</span><br />

I have my audio and I have a pinterest board. I can't share my audio but I can let you look at the things I've been thinking about as inspiration and things by sharing the pinterest link with you.<br />

<br />
The first of these opportunities was one of the teaching opportunities. It was for the LEAPS creative extras week back in the earlier part of the year. I can't remember exactly when but it was fairly early on.<br />
<br />
My job was to program a class and teach it to a group of students interested in animation who were signed up to do the course. It was just a few hours in one afternoon but it was really fun.<br />
<br />
The course I put together involved learning how we accept visual clues when we watch films or shows and how to create those cues both in individual characters and also in narratives. To do that I showed them a small powerpoint so that they understood what I was talking about and then I explained to them how to do the activities I had planned. I had planned to do three. Character exquisite corpses, storyboard exquisite corpses and finally make some thaumatropes.<br />
<br />
I remember this one as being really very stressful because I was told on the day of that more people had signed up for my course than any other that was offered. That put a lot of pressure on me. But I think it went ok, I didn't panic too much and Fracesca was my teaching assistant which really helped me out. The kids seemed as engaged as they possibly could, you know, being teenagers. I got some good feedback from Alice at LEAPS following the day too.<br />
<br />
You can check out the powerpoint I made for that program in my dropbox.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The next educating experience I had was one out at Dean's Community High School. I accompanied Marvel comic book artist Gary Erskine out to a workshop he had organised with a couple of the local schools who's pupils were interested in studying at art schools and had particular interest in movies, or illustration. Gary was doing this as an extension of the ACES program, which I was a part of before. That's why I was asked to come along, because I was to give the slightly more aces lead talk before Gary's. I was chosen because my discipline much more closely linked to Gary. I was to talk about my own work and experiences at ACES and then also at high school. I showed them my showreel and I talked for a bit about some other elements that had been successful for me and of course what I got out of ACES. Following that Gary took over with his workshop and I stuck around to help people who got stuck, offer them prompts and ask them questions about their work.<br />

Lastly and most recently I was involved with a company called <a href="http://www.stopmogo.com/" target="_blank">STOPMOGO</a> run by a really nice woman called Emma. I was assisting her in the running of a workshop at the mini maker's faire during the Edinburgh Science Festival. I had to dress in lots of luminous colours and teach children how to make stop motion under a rostrum camera. It was a long and busy day and I felt very guilty taking lunch because of how busy we were but in the end it was a lot of fun and a really good experience. When it began to quieten down I sat with a few of the children and made a thaumatrope with them (which I have physically handed in). I really enjoyed it and I'm hoping some shots of me working show up in the best bits video when they get around to making it. But I keep checking and they haven't made it yet so I'll just... keep waiting I guess. In the mean time here's some pictures of us Emma sent me!</div>

I think it was just after the last hand in I did this so maybe I haven't but my friend Eli in film and TV was looking for someone to make some concept sketches about some elements of the film he was making this semester a film called "snail shell seekers".<br />
<br />
It's about a little boy and his sister who live in an underwater submarine with a ship captain and a womanising harpoonist. His sister is pretty sick and he's looking for a way to make her better. He earns his keep on their ship by collecting the snails that are pretty much all over the ship... I don't really know any more about the film than that. I've been keeping up with his progress though.<br />
<br />
So when Eli appeared online looking for help creating some concept art because he had some presentations to do and he couldn't draw well enough to say what he meant I knew I wanted to help him out because it sounded interesting. He was looking at a style I really liked and I love making concept art! So naturally I wanted to give him a hand with it.<br />
<br />
He gave me some booklets to look at to get an idea of the story and the style and things and then he told me what he was looking for me to do. He left it pretty open but specified a few things he was interested in having.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the visual references Eli sent me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6HnIlZ6dPKJ2Ss7pEzPmGz9xvL2YHdJCP7_vsHu5s6d5rhxroA1ObKzmDJzgitOowqJYw1_SOVeB66sFHkwe-kDWlAmHA5s3KYWfTCxRciapNfIacOrEcnyYLevsMOCe9-zLvuN0FCNrb/s1600/eli+concept+art+003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6HnIlZ6dPKJ2Ss7pEzPmGz9xvL2YHdJCP7_vsHu5s6d5rhxroA1ObKzmDJzgitOowqJYw1_SOVeB66sFHkwe-kDWlAmHA5s3KYWfTCxRciapNfIacOrEcnyYLevsMOCe9-zLvuN0FCNrb/s640/eli+concept+art+003.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the things Eli requested was something similar to a painting of a destroyed city he saw that he really liked but with a much more red sky to it because that's what he imagined the dystopian future that this was set in to look like. I loved this piece once I made it for him. I always meant to go back and add a submarine to the gap up the top and see what he said but I didn't ever manage.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWozGPEfp3545wh8EZtE-32amLnryrBRW6GMtqrNc-wpn3d0oF6DG-9cEDUAk3YUd7tcB4iTRm7V9lLnCBLwpdighHCQgtRDKA6IDkZ5037WZertEkz6CxvgvauxCTqPCnoGZtnyIodl7i/s1600/eli+concept+art+interiors.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWozGPEfp3545wh8EZtE-32amLnryrBRW6GMtqrNc-wpn3d0oF6DG-9cEDUAk3YUd7tcB4iTRm7V9lLnCBLwpdighHCQgtRDKA6IDkZ5037WZertEkz6CxvgvauxCTqPCnoGZtnyIodl7i/s640/eli+concept+art+interiors.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He was also interested in seeing the inside of the submarine drawn out in some way. He wanted the style of the art I made him to be quite scratchy and rough and charcoally and although I felt like I failed him in that regards, he seemed pretty happy with the results. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0VRhj0mHybnip6umHeQQ7ZTztav-Q7hATbVBX8KGypSQm1oCGwKFofTQyMdDhjy3sMV8kO133FXKJGyyggaRNTucT2UgNXh-WnHR1tvneqJRYw99GcRRmrZjC7SWnDAUA2GbdNWhSJJac/s1600/eli%2527s+concept+art+-+harpoon+scene.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="472" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0VRhj0mHybnip6umHeQQ7ZTztav-Q7hATbVBX8KGypSQm1oCGwKFofTQyMdDhjy3sMV8kO133FXKJGyyggaRNTucT2UgNXh-WnHR1tvneqJRYw99GcRRmrZjC7SWnDAUA2GbdNWhSJJac/s640/eli%2527s+concept+art+-+harpoon+scene.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Finally I constructed this scene as a quick look into some of the characters. The harpoonist on the left, the little boy in the middle and the captain on the right. I didn't know much about them when I made this but Eli says I got pretty close to what he saw and he loved my version of the little boy. He had asked for this scene specifically because it's a climactic point in the film where the little boy has to force the two older gentlemen into helping him help his sister.<br />
<br />
I mean if I was doing it for him again now I would be able to see the elements a bit more clearly but that's what progress is like I suppose. I still really love these.<br />

<br />
Ok so 2 out of 3 of the films were very straight forward and just required Scott and I back and forthing about them till I got everything exactly the way he wanted it. They were super simple and didn't require strenuous amounts of my effort. They looked great in the end and we were really pleased with them. There was some great cut away humour put in and they are really nice films.<br />
<br />
The clincher though, the one I invested most of my time into and was really excited for was the montage scene. The montage took ages from sourcing all the material and editing it al to make sure it all looked good too layering it together to create depth and make sure it worked with the other parts in the sequence and making sure it worked with the music. I had maybe like 100 things I was thinking about at any one time.<br />
<br />
There were so many elements that were to only begin at this point or to have ended by that point or to be specifically included and then there were the elements I was in charge of completely by myself.<br />
<br />
It was one of these projects where I noticed that I was playing it over and over as I was working and repeatedly refining the same parts over and over to make sure I got them right. It was one of those projects where I didn't feel my enthusiasm depleting and I just really enjoyed working on it. I think it really helped that I really liked the music track I was working against so I could listen to the work I was doing over and over and not mind at all. I wasn't even thrown by the nature of some of the content Scott had wanted me too include because he had really blurred it out and made it almost too soft. I had to harshen elements up for certain parts of the script which I didn't think I would have to do at all.<br />
<br />
By the end I was adding elements in entirely off my own back because I was beginning to really feel the piece as a whole.<br />
<br />
I can't show you any of it because they are still working their way around galleries places. Think they're in London at the moment! But they are in my drop box for my assessment.<br />

She asked me if I wanted to help her out with it and suggested I get spencer's help with it. She asked for a creature of some sort hatching from an egg and doing something anything I wanted.<br />
<br />
I decided to be weird and hatch an alligator, who promptly got annoyed at the easter celebrations and hid himself away in his egg again.<br />

This part I got spenders help with. It was a little messy and there was several stages where we had to prop things up with not entirely edible elements but we managed in the end and we were really pleased with ourselves! Thanks spencer!</div>

<br />
In addition to that I helped with the pixelation of the beginning cracking of the egg and the cutting into the cake.<br />

<br />
<br />
It was real fun actually. We couldn't attach dragon frame at all because we couldn't plug the camcorder into it so we worked the old fashioned way. But our combined natural knowledge of animation meant that we didn't really need to be checking the camera too often anyway and when julia put the whole thing together it looked really good!<br />

I believe I just entered two of them but seriously my mind is a mess just now so I couldn't really tell you. I remember two though so I am going to talk about two. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first one I didn't get very far in which was unfortunate because I would have genuinely loved to have won this. Might enter again next year though and actually think about it in advance and see if that makes a difference. I found it when looking into the potential for sponsors for a larger exhibition later in the year that it now turns out we won't need but I was looking anyway and came across this opportunity. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a design a label competition as the final leg of the mash tag competition at brewdog brewery. There was a couple of examples but they said it could be anything and that you could be anyone so I thought hey what's the harm? I kind of stuck a little bit to the brewdog aesthetic but not really. I remembered to include their signature colour but other than that I made the design I wanted to make. I thought about making it like a triple IPA with oak and sour cherry but I really didn't want to make a cliqued label that just included the things on the label so I played around with the sour cherry concept. Now that I have seen the designs that got shortlisted I wish I had just gone with cliqued I might have at least gotten shortlisted. But I tried to stick to something that felt quite punk whilst still appealing to large markets like brewdog do. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But shoulda, woulda, coulda! lets look at my design!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxnAGeGly9XZxWc9iYZdSZAclk7I-KQwmUl3dgNm9S-yTMSbHJyCH14fdvlFpmusug42ZSnEcqIM8bZ-xREr_kv0JlGOSzWUiMa-wiWugm3ZtB-5mwC61BWrpNNBTXf1y4l1ONUB4_MGJW/s1600/mashtag+RGB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxnAGeGly9XZxWc9iYZdSZAclk7I-KQwmUl3dgNm9S-yTMSbHJyCH14fdvlFpmusug42ZSnEcqIM8bZ-xREr_kv0JlGOSzWUiMa-wiWugm3ZtB-5mwC61BWrpNNBTXf1y4l1ONUB4_MGJW/s640/mashtag+RGB.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If I'm honest I don't care what brewdog thought cause they're short list was crap and this is bad ass so whatever! XD</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other competition I entered was fruitful! I entered it along side Julia and it proved to be a good move for both of us. It was a comic competition and if you were successful at impressing the judges then they published your comic in a comic book. It was by a company called artcore, in conduction with out of the blueprint printing studio at the out of the blue drill hall and put into a book called opposable thumbs! I visited them recently actually to see the printing space and have a chat. They really liked my comic down there! It was nice to here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we were to submit a comic of either a page to 4 pages and if they liked it, they printed it. It was really simple, other than that the only other thing we had to do was be between the ages of 13 and 25. Easy peasy! So now they are going to put it in their risoprinter and print my comic in blue and red. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here's the comic to look at:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
She gave me two scenes to do, one of which I have completed and the other is still a work in progress.<br />
<br />
I'm just doing some colouring in for her but I really liked the piece I got from her in the end and it looked really nice once it was all done.<br />
<br />
The scene I finished was of her character Jimmy running forward and the camera was keeping pace with him from behind.<br />
<br />
She gave me all the things I was going to need to complete the scene, so paintbrushes, colour pallets, the outlines, everything. It only took me half a day to finish it in as it was just a small scene but I had to pay attention to the detail very closely because nothing else was happening on the screen so I wanted to make sure there were no small details that would get caught on the big screen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Alice hasn't made a version yet with just this part in it but part of a bigger sequence which I have linked here for you instead. I also believe this is the graphic she used in her section of the degree show booklet so I might take a picture of that for this when it's done too.</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12584868584387079103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203699290828734728.post-28794591736095154812016-05-01T08:38:00.000-07:002016-05-01T08:38:09.170-07:00GMH - SoundOne of the things GMH really wanted when they contracted these films was that they be playable without sound so that being worried about listening to an information video on your sexual health in a public place wouldn't put you off. I kept this in mind the entire way through the creation of this film. It was a huge driving force in why the film was narrated through speech bubbles and mathematics. I wanted to make sure that at no point was sound absolutely crucial.<br />
<br />
Of course I wanted sound there however. I wanted you to have the option. Setting it in a club gave me a huge direction to steer in when it came to sound because I obviously needed club music.<br />
<br />
I think I thought a bit too hard about this part because I was over complicating it. I was going to have muffled club music and have it dip in volume when the maths came up and then there were going to be popping and pinging noises when the bubbles came up and by the time it came to looking for the track to use as the music I really didn't want any more than just the track. After all they are in a club so you wouldn't hear anything else.<br />
<br />
I had this idea for the music in my head too. This whole film was inspired by games and how game characters typically talked to each other or expressed things in their games. Which was through speech bubbles. The character design is also heavily influenced by the characters from dumb ways too die which is a popular mobile app game. So I thought that if I could help it I would like to keep the track feeling old fashioned game play or menu music.<br />
<br />
I ended up picking three tracks from kevin MacLeod that I really liked. (Seriously do we use anyone else?!) and all three of them fitted to the film really well. I had quite a hard time picking actually because there was something very fitting about all three of them. However in the end practicality won over and I picked the track that allowed me to focus more on what was happening when I was watching. When I was listening to overcast I didn't think it was as overpowering as the others and i just thought they sat together far better than who likes to party or disco con tutti did.<br />
<br />
Here are links to the other two tracks I liked but didn't use<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/49AiqH-DuR0/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/49AiqH-DuR0?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/DrfDAL1azrQ/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DrfDAL1azrQ?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that was it, the last big decision I had to make for this film. I recently found that Waverly Care is right round the corner from my house and I can pop in to talk to them some time soon about these films. Which means hopefully it won't be too long till I can put a brand on the end and hand them over to them. Which is very exciting because I'd like for them to have them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But that's it! GMH all done and dusted!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12584868584387079103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203699290828734728.post-47485944462044756092016-05-01T07:54:00.003-07:002016-05-01T07:57:17.258-07:00GMH - AnimatingLets talk about animating! God did the animating for this take a long time! I could not believe it! I kept putting off doing it because when I was doing it, it took ages and I felt like I was getting no where.<br />
<br />
The really unusual thing about taking all year to animate this was the countless times I wanted to go back and change something because I had decided I wanted to push that scene a bit further, push the acting a bit further or had learnt something in the later part of the year that would have really helped me when I was animating earlier. Honestly that happened so freaking often that I couldn't even tell you. I'm going to pick out a few scenes to talk about that were difficult at the time, some I've learnt about and so on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These below two scenes I am going to talk about because I learnt things when animating them. Or there animation was just significant enough to discuss. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPWdgNoBLRr005BaiU2wJxCLLlQD9H59L-M8jH6rCmGxCjedBSCfTpi-NvtKgUunYv1RyBl-b8xVV_KRP3v18-dxyjdxvDmIrxa4PlrVKWcQpYzA2LDH9vgRp6P4xmjn6Jx6DzvlfgOIC/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-05-01+at+15.18.40.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPWdgNoBLRr005BaiU2wJxCLLlQD9H59L-M8jH6rCmGxCjedBSCfTpi-NvtKgUunYv1RyBl-b8xVV_KRP3v18-dxyjdxvDmIrxa4PlrVKWcQpYzA2LDH9vgRp6P4xmjn6Jx6DzvlfgOIC/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-05-01+at+15.18.40.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This scene here I did part way along the process after I completed 10x10x16. I ended up animating the lightbulb moving just by key framing the drawing of the lightbulb in premier because it was far easier than hand drawing it all out. I really wanted this animation to be smooth and that allowed me to do that. This was definitely one of those points where I learnt something because there were so many points in my film I would have loved to have done this from the get go. I would really have loved to animate the entire thing in after effects to be honest but I didn't have that figured out at the beginning of the year. And I had really wished I'd done it after Francesca told me about the plug in they were using for their collab this semester. But hey what're you going to do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've also noticed his hand got cut off in this scene and that's a little annoying... I'm sure you don't notice it when you watch it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdskyenccaz3IxCAnGmd5MZlLToseFBTwlNlPYZlYiv5KxOly6kEvhpz1MXGrLMmPIc1948mC8z22Y06IGA6WkPr8IYtmaztiTAw55hMuY08QSptQfDNT9IQAu8ZIMnzvbJfD7rJolATFG/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-05-01+at+15.18.51.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdskyenccaz3IxCAnGmd5MZlLToseFBTwlNlPYZlYiv5KxOly6kEvhpz1MXGrLMmPIc1948mC8z22Y06IGA6WkPr8IYtmaztiTAw55hMuY08QSptQfDNT9IQAu8ZIMnzvbJfD7rJolATFG/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-05-01+at+15.18.51.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This next scene I want to talk about much earlier on in the process. I hand sketched this out when I animated it. I did this in Flash so it was rough but I could see the results really very fast. I can't imagine having done this any other way because I revised and changed this scene so many times to get the head movement right. I was really fortunate the day I animated this that I had megan in the department using the other end of desk to work because her department was a no go area for a while. Every so often I would just get her to turn her head in a disapproving manor and that real helped me perfect this movement. Now It's probably my favourite scene in the film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These next two examples are examples of times when taking so long to make a film caused me difficulties and inconsistencies that I really notice now the film is completed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So all of the above images are connected to the same point I am about to make. I spent such a long time at the beginning of the year deciding on shapes and semiotics for this film (check sketchbook) to make sure nothing was confusing or misleading but I'm annoyed at myself that I didn't take that as far as to continually make sure the ?'s were consistent in the final film. I wanted to make them as bold as the rest of the mathematical elements like the ticks and the hearts which is why I thought yellow because it feels like the colour you only choose when you can't make your mind up or are trying to stay on neutral ground. Then when I put it in the whitish bubbles I noticed it wasn't too clear so I outlined it in black but now it just feels messy and inconsistent with the other yellow question marks, which all work fine. Then occasionally when they aren't part of a mathematical equation I just leave them black. That was deliberate because I didn't want them to be associated with the maths but I don't know if its even worth it or if that's just as confusing as having them yellow would have been. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not sure what to do for the best without asking a whole bunch of people seemingly nit picky and random questions about it. Which I don't really have the time nor the enthusiasm to do anymore. So I guess it'll just have to bug me a little. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other inconsistency that I notice is the way I've chosen to represent the bar itself in this film. When I saw this film play out in my mind way back at the conceptual stage of the process I saw only hints of the bar space they were in. It wasn't really relevant past a typical access point to these types of situations. We've already seen the dance floor and now we just needed to see the bar. And in the final film I represent it in a few different ways. I wish ultimately that I had just stuck to the first representation of it I show you. I love having it represented by a darker section of the screen. I think it's clear, I think it's stylised and I think it functions. There's really nothing else you need it to do. But That was the last incarnation of the bar I came to work on. I wonder if it really only works because of the angle it's at makes it look like we're seeing it from the top down. Which we are meant to be I just wonder if I could have made it work for the other scenes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the two examples down from that I use a simple line to represent the bar because the camera is at eye hight with the bar. In one of those scenes I also add some bar stools because the character is sitting down, an element I emit from my favourite version of the bar. It's fine but every time I see that scene swing onto screen in the final animation I wish I had thought about it differently. I would at very least change the opacity of the chairs to 56% which is the opacity of the bar top in the later scene and the ground of the opening scene.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally the last scene where the bar is present you can see I didn't include it at all! The characters arms are bending as if they are leaning against it but I didn't put it in there at all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Given more time I'd like to have figured out a way to bring the later three incarnations closer to the one I liked. Ideally I would have had this figured out before I started the animating but to begin with I was up against a deadline and sometimes you can only see an issue in hindsight. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that's all my pros and cons of the animation process for GMH. I unfortunately can't show the animation on my blog because although the animation is finished I still didn't hear from GMH or Waverly care on which branding element they wanted from the final film and I obviously can't release it without that information. It will be in my dropbox for assessment though. But for everyone who is not one of my course leaders. You're going to have to wait. Sorry!</div>

We're first and for most a music appreciation society. And because of that we hold a lot of gigs during term time, which provides a lot of opportunities for promotional posters and fliers. For as long as I can remember my friend Kirsty from illustration had made them but she kind of stopped going to the society but I still went pretty frequently and everyone knew me and things. That's why I was asked to do them close to the end of this academic year. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first one I was asked to do because kirsty had stopped doing them and they needed a gig poster pretty fast. They are my friends so when they asked about it I said yes and they were really easy to work with. Mostly, Nico had a lot of nit picky, tiny things he wanted me to change but instead of saying them all at once I was asked for one revision at a time which was fairly irritating because on this particular day I was trying to get to work but eventually it was all correct and he was happy with it. Even if he did opt for cheep printing and they printed like crap and I was sad about it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2G0XNajZG_AAyIJAF1Dk011KGirqEi97LsGEIb76YQIT0ulEs1lYrQHdX6gJ0oBNHCVSVHcPGXUDxVHn1jGTZ2cycRi3CCYKOTPu7kzc7XANssCB2WZIe4exWOTp5f07s90qHi3-jLAU-/s1600/edgar+flyer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2G0XNajZG_AAyIJAF1Dk011KGirqEi97LsGEIb76YQIT0ulEs1lYrQHdX6gJ0oBNHCVSVHcPGXUDxVHn1jGTZ2cycRi3CCYKOTPu7kzc7XANssCB2WZIe4exWOTp5f07s90qHi3-jLAU-/s640/edgar+flyer.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the first version I sent them. I had originally planned for the symbols to sit along the strip underneath the big main design but they were too small like that so I made them bigger so you could at least see them. I guess in my mind that was a huge improvement but to the outside viewer the logos were still indecipherable and Nico asked for them bigger. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNr1OtuMHTbkIOKU21BN04M7p1sMpDWoYF9OX3SXYMUgdygJa6mpieAAe7y6wB11isublKgKpjBgInFjofA0mWprNGR6-_l7TQvfHBhbvW_ozGY2ARR_5EnSyqPLCGzWtVOozXNsGVAU5h/s1600/edgar+flyer2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNr1OtuMHTbkIOKU21BN04M7p1sMpDWoYF9OX3SXYMUgdygJa6mpieAAe7y6wB11isublKgKpjBgInFjofA0mWprNGR6-_l7TQvfHBhbvW_ozGY2ARR_5EnSyqPLCGzWtVOozXNsGVAU5h/s640/edgar+flyer2.jpg" width="448" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That initial shift around caused absolute chaos for me! For ages I didn't think everything was going to fit and that I was going to have to tell him that was it. But eventually somehow I managed to get everything on like this and nothing was too small or creating too many plank spaces or anything. So I sent it back to Nico. Who then at that point chose to mention that it should also say where the gig was going to be so you know people could turn up... Thanks Nico</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the next revision. This time complete with location of the gig. He also had me make the spider bigger because it was harder to see the symbol but to be honest I was going to do that anyway because it just wasn't looking right before this point. Then I really thought he would be happy. Couldn't possibly think what he would complain about. But you know non creatives he found something. He said to me the arrow is obstructing the headless kross logo. -.- like really? it's not that annoying... but also not too big a deal to change so I changed it.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
THEN EVENTUALLY WE ARRIVED AT THE FINAL POSTER WHICH WAS PUT UP AROUND PLACES!! YEY!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That was the first poster they had ever asked me to make. I am now officially the designer for this society. As well as the president for this upcoming academic year. Yey! So lots of responsibilities there. But my presidency officially started around two weeks ago so I am now official in these positions and working as such. We've already scheduled our first gig for the year on the 18th of May so president me handed designer me a designing task to do. It's quite efficient really. So this poster was for a Sweedish band called "sanctrum". Job one when making a poster is to get a hold of PNG transparent copies of the logos. This is not something my secretary, treasurer or fanzine editor understand. So job one is really edit out the background of cropped images of screenshots of logos. Thanks guys. But once I've got that I can begin designing. I learnt from last time around that it's easier to start with the logos and then fill the design into the spaces rather than the other way around. It definitely works because I had no complaints about this poster. They didn't want to change anything about it. And they said I could work in colour. I had to ask because I'm not in charge of our budget, Ross is.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Our exhibition happened! I'm sorry I didn't update on it before because it might have been nice to have a record of my own excitement but I was far too busy to find any time to write about it in any places that weren't 100% necessary. I was to busy talking to people who on the space, making Facebook pages, chasing up people for films, talking to local business' about putting up fliers for us.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Weirdly the hardest part of all this was trying to mobilise the students. Most of them didn't want involved until the fun parts, like the actual day set up. Some of them were really good though. And some of them not only did nothing but they didn't even come to the exhibition.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway I just thought I'd put all the promotional work I had a hand in creating in here. We did a lot of really good stuff all together but I'm just going to post the parts I helped with.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH-C7zAxe_tJB55j54yLZ9OQrvjMDwnIpOcOjCDM9Yo5PETNdfyZLL5ann1Nhydi1oJPPCuNSC-DDn5muhXtGHIBkmwo2yFzors8r6jKUUrZ-QUep_YfZAbBDfCi5sFcuPXICgdjHTLysM/s1600/POSTER+ABI.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH-C7zAxe_tJB55j54yLZ9OQrvjMDwnIpOcOjCDM9Yo5PETNdfyZLL5ann1Nhydi1oJPPCuNSC-DDn5muhXtGHIBkmwo2yFzors8r6jKUUrZ-QUep_YfZAbBDfCi5sFcuPXICgdjHTLysM/s640/POSTER+ABI.png" width="452" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the poster I made for stuff that moves. I am pleased with it. I love the colours and I love the concept. I really like it and I'm going to keep some of my copies. I just worked straight with the basic elements in the title. Stuff that moves. The movement I embodied in the swirling pink that is helping the rabbit/panda creature levitate. Then to embody the film part I included a box back telly. I used to have a massive one in my family living room when I was a kid and so I have really fond memories of them. The panda/rabbit creature, I don't even know. When I saw this concept in my head I saw him too and I loved him. If I couldn't see him as vividly as this I would likely have given up on the idea because for a period of time none of this was working. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok so this was our physical marketing but physical marketing can't move and that left us with a massive blind spot in our marketing in that stuff that moves is a fairly ambiguous title so how are we going to tell them it's animation? Or even so much as capitalise on the movement part. So to do it we also had a digital promotional campaign. We made a gif and a trailer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Earlier in the semester as well, we were fundraising and being artists we thought we should try and sell some art. So we had as many people as possible create prints to be sold along side cakes. For some reason we did this in the art school, which made no sense to me because artists don't need more art but hey that's what happened. I didn't sell anything. I was not happy. Anyway this was the illustration I had printed.</div>

Like seriously long. but that's because between then and now we had another meeting with gay man's health where we all caught up, animatics were shown and Alistair told us that gay man's health was becoming a part of waverly care. He said they still wanted the films but were unsure on the branding that would go at the end of the films so he was going to wait till he was sure about them before he got the films off of us. He didn't ever get back to us. So I had intended to continue to work on it and just get it finished so that they could have it when they wanted it. But other things just kept getting in the way and I just didn't want to finish it when I had so much other stuff going on. It was too much for a while and I put it off till I had more time.<br />
<br />
That time did not come for a very long time. I kept getting more things and other deadlines approached far before I had intended. But I have finished the film so they can collect it whenever they like it. But I won't be linking it here. I will be dropping it into my dropbox for my tutors to look at and I will also be putting some pictures but for now I am going to talk about animatics!!<br />
<br />
So I mentioned in my last post about GMH that I was going to revise the storyboard. I was really lazy with that and the revision is only different in the respect that it has a big red x through the square to be removed. Wa - lah! Very minimal changes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiubWJRzD2DRIW_5Z6iyoTAihySw8wK1C5dDrfsNueBtBPlJ-qAs1GMGhO-1lNuA8JYgzgCaDYNrEqyK2ZSbgFFCiSwdW-lyGyQYh1uKr9-reYut2szATax_8vjeCcxeUMz6b7eypb8HI7I/s1600/second+storyboard+gay+man%2527s+health.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiubWJRzD2DRIW_5Z6iyoTAihySw8wK1C5dDrfsNueBtBPlJ-qAs1GMGhO-1lNuA8JYgzgCaDYNrEqyK2ZSbgFFCiSwdW-lyGyQYh1uKr9-reYut2szATax_8vjeCcxeUMz6b7eypb8HI7I/s640/second+storyboard+gay+man%2527s+health.jpg" width="418" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's funny actually because I was very proud of this storyboard when I first made it and I still am, I just would have made it differently now. I know now that camera angles are directions that should be included outside of the panels. Even though within this animation there are gaps in actions while the camera pans around I still would not have had the panning angles in their own boxes. I also may have actually explained some things to myself. I think at the time though I really knew this story inside and out so I didn't need too and when I told my clients I acted it out a bit as if I was the characters. I hope that wasn't embarrassing...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway that's the storyboard revision. I did a lot more revising when it got to my animatic. I took a long time to put this together so I was constantly changing things because I was always watching previous parts while making the new ones and I was asking people's opinions as I went so things kept getting changed. So here's the animatic for this film. Which again is another pretty much bang on version. I kept very close too it for the final film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZRYkZq76Zgc/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZRYkZq76Zgc?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously between this version and the storyboard there are very few changes. It just moves now. I also cut out this small part where we follow a character around a club and nearly see from his POV while he scans it. I really only included that because I wanted some playful cinematic ways to move through the space. I don't like it when I have to limit my camera angles to flat and static cameras because it's an animation and it makes my workload to difficult. Unfortunately on this occasion I had too much work and the only thing I could do too make sure I finished this film on time was cut some unnecessary elements out of the film. Other than allowing me to fulfil my need for fancy camera work that scene didn't give me any reason to keep it. So it got cut! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next to that I spent a long time on this animatic trying to make sure things played for long enough too make sure that the maths was understandable to people for the first time. This is how I ended up with quite so many people watching the animatic. I got some advice from some people on things from that process too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For example people were confused by the initial introduction of the hearts and ticks and maths that's curtail to the animation. It was important that people didn't get too hung up on trying to figure them out and miss what they were actually saying. To get around that I included another establishing shot of a crowded dance floor in the club, several of those on the dance floor have bubbles above their heads with hearts and ticks. So that way we know not only is this how people talk in this animation but also that this is the end game. To present these elements to one another. So that unconfused that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly I didn't change this element in the animatic because it came from the last person I showed the animatic too but I changed it in the final film for the animatic. It was pointed out to me that I use two different ways to say no in the animatic and if I want the maths to stay consistent I was going to need to take one of them away. which I did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then just the animation.</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12584868584387079103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203699290828734728.post-86575391221328192652016-04-30T11:48:00.001-07:002016-04-30T11:48:24.614-07:00PBC - The FilmOk so this will be the last post on PCB!! Because I finished it and my check arrived in the mail and it's all over!! WOO!!<br />
<br />
So animatic was approved, fairly easily actually. I forgot to include the flush noise in it, Which annoys me because I wanted it to be in there so I only had to assure them that I hadn't forgotten about it and I was given full approval. They had said they liked the adverts I had shown them in our initial meeting, just to jog your memory they were like the oreo advert and the american express, realise the potential adverts. So I tried to keep that in mind the whole way through.<br />
<br />
The process of actually making the film was pretty stressful if I'm honest. In this post I'm going to link it and then screen shot some parts to talk about that were particularly trying or that I learnt new things from in order to make that scene work, along with some parts that I am just a fan of and want to talk about.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://vimeo.com/159497396">https://vimeo.com/159497396</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So there's the video link. It's on private just now until PBC release it themselves but you can watch it by inputting: PBC 1 into the password field.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So let me break down making the video process a little bit. I actually thought the parts of this that were hard were going to be the easier parts and the easier parts were going to be hard so I completely misinterpreted this video. I thought it would be fairly easy but take a long time but instead it was actually pretty technical and I finished it pretty fast. I'm going to pick out a few examples to talk about down here. Things that were challenging, things that succeeded and things that I would like to change next time. Let's get started!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtTunHomt4IvpWpeMNnlcdlZLVn1EUTUW3ZZBusMPPcmawFbZQ46iXqLQznEinHjyCue0eXzbjQF5qHTnxeksVtXg3sklTaJlOVtQb1Rjb1sz-VppnxU6tVnRgA9n8BIKzwI0fY1IchbFJ/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.54.39.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtTunHomt4IvpWpeMNnlcdlZLVn1EUTUW3ZZBusMPPcmawFbZQ46iXqLQznEinHjyCue0eXzbjQF5qHTnxeksVtXg3sklTaJlOVtQb1Rjb1sz-VppnxU6tVnRgA9n8BIKzwI0fY1IchbFJ/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.54.39.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I liked this whole scene, so from the transition before to the transition after I was really pleased with this scene. It was challenging because there was so much to remember here, the back and forwarding of the ticking of the clock was an entirely different process animating in after effects than it was when I was hand animating it and that took me some time to get used to. In addition to that kind of animating I needed to animate the transitions as well which involved transforming three different elements and making them look attached and seamless whilst doing so. By complete accident in fact I forgot to animate the scale of the clock hand during that transition. It's one of the only things that annoys me when I watch this animation back however I know that it's not that noticeable and that nobody else even knows it's a mistake. It's just something I would change if I was doing this again. If I had the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDVRAje1JCpib28nXxgZ8g_lhrnGxLz9w-zYfwRposN2b_WmrR6qIuP1luhVtg9yVApOQdhoRnWxWnbN4h-svHv6p7E4S7wmXezhmKw2gzWD6q3kFB9vdxnU5QafcVQ-fdeFS7IeOimdTl/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.56.01.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDVRAje1JCpib28nXxgZ8g_lhrnGxLz9w-zYfwRposN2b_WmrR6qIuP1luhVtg9yVApOQdhoRnWxWnbN4h-svHv6p7E4S7wmXezhmKw2gzWD6q3kFB9vdxnU5QafcVQ-fdeFS7IeOimdTl/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.56.01.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This scene. Urgh. I really an not keen on this scene. Once I'd made the stylistic decision I thought for continuity sake I should just stick to it. So I tried to make the dust clouds here out of just a few rotating shapes and things. It does it's job no problem. You know what's happening but I just don't like it very much. There was one point where it really didn't do it's job and it was unclear and it just annoyed me. I watched it for ages, on loop, just me watching clouds. Then I enlisted some help and it was many of us watching these clouds before eventually we were like cartoon characters throw some punches in these kinds of fights so lets add in one of those. And EVENTUALLY that worked, once I'd messed around with the size and the speed and things because for a long time it just made things look weird. Still though I'd love to have had the time to figure out a slightly more convincing dust cloud for this scene.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMCGHj62CwnZR6iIV1RC6e0ko-JmcMWXm73DoVB3y1PrHw2oUT-9wo6-7tsKk3DGmPb-xYOZP3sCWlt4R1LRpN0SGRF577HLg39jPD2tTIA-bQOv0oIsFTnUoxHh__H9nmk9ErdRb-NobC/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.54.59.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMCGHj62CwnZR6iIV1RC6e0ko-JmcMWXm73DoVB3y1PrHw2oUT-9wo6-7tsKk3DGmPb-xYOZP3sCWlt4R1LRpN0SGRF577HLg39jPD2tTIA-bQOv0oIsFTnUoxHh__H9nmk9ErdRb-NobC/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.54.59.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This scene!!! I was about ready to murder this scene! I could NOT figure this scene out at all. I just couldn't understand how to make it work and I was so frustrated. Originally I had the green on one layer, separate from the body and I just wanted it to fill the body up and go back down but my mask wasn't working. It was moving and it was only masking one way and if I wanted to invert it, it was removing the wrong things. I took it to Neil and he was stumped and I couldn't google it because nothing was coming up when I did. It was just solo stressful. It wasn't until after I had decided I would just have to hand animate it and risk it not looking quite as smooth as the rest of the animation that Mike told me this scene wasn't working because I actually wanted to put a track matte on it. I nearly had steam coming out of my ears. He knows how to do everything! but hey at least I know that now and I will never forget that piece of advice. It's so well ingrained in my mind. Cause of all this stuff I hate this scene. Especially because I couldn't get the new cut out version synced up quite right with the body and there's an annoying line around the outside where it doesn't quite fit into the body. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvKlS6ginVNh27DMahI86N0vSKAZt8nmDJ7TThcaCOoZ7eBto2Ut1hEDAgHW8adS_tabB7YHXr26WK5vpij-2kfouw93zXnCgyJbN7eT3XYGyjhFYdqy1AK9W2fu3SosAZOE_bEL94CgI/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.55.12.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvKlS6ginVNh27DMahI86N0vSKAZt8nmDJ7TThcaCOoZ7eBto2Ut1hEDAgHW8adS_tabB7YHXr26WK5vpij-2kfouw93zXnCgyJbN7eT3XYGyjhFYdqy1AK9W2fu3SosAZOE_bEL94CgI/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.55.12.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlfAo-HnQt2ApFo3hXuWYADaoKq1Xevf6ddjTTwoQkRVvD1uhdbI9IuNyA6sabXhEOSxpLDKRmCEfvITgBqH2CrWhkLr7SZMu73csLz4JAJ4i39EPuHMTgz6PdnxjH3kE6XhB667XGvuud/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.55.22.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlfAo-HnQt2ApFo3hXuWYADaoKq1Xevf6ddjTTwoQkRVvD1uhdbI9IuNyA6sabXhEOSxpLDKRmCEfvITgBqH2CrWhkLr7SZMu73csLz4JAJ4i39EPuHMTgz6PdnxjH3kE6XhB667XGvuud/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-30+at+18.55.22.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I'm going to move on to things that I really felt worked. My film to me was split into 3 sections with 2 major transition scenes. These are those two major transition scenes. So everything before the first transition scene was on section of the film, then the second and third another and after the third was the final. So I was pretty happy when I animated these transitions and they felt natural and worked. I was also pretty pleased with that first one because when I showed the film at the final meeting, Abby was very impressed and it was one of the things she commented on once everything was over. I just think they are worth mentioning because they really held the film together and I'm glad they worked out.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one there was one of these fantastic instances where I thought it was going to be really complicated and take ages to figure out how to attach every element to one another for just the period of time necessary to swing the new scene into place. But! Actually it was very simple and I got this instant gratification moment afterwards when I could see it working.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So the final scene I am going to talk about is the end one. I loved the whole ending. From about the smiling kidney point ( which I feel I should add that the clients loved!) all the way to the end. I was excited about doing this part because when I made the animatic it paced really well and it looked really good and I was very excited about seeing it finished. It turned out really well I think and I loved the look of the books. I mean by this point I was running seriously low on time an it was about 3am of the day I was to have it finished on and I was just getting to this part. Otherwise I would have made the books more animated, like have pages and have them fall at offset times to one another but I just didn't have the time for that. I don't really feel like that effects things too much anyway. I was really proud of this whole last section of the film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So when I took it to the clients they were really happy with it. They liked the smiling kidney. They were only interested in changing a work they forgot to tell me to take out of the audio. They were really very pleased. They said that we did a better job than any of the professional companies they approached about it at the beginning. Then I tried to make the hand over process as simple as possible and then everything was done and dusted. Project over. Job finished. Hell yeys!</div>

I'm sorry. I was going to say something worse so I promise this was better. Anyway it's time to talk about animatics!<br />
<br />
So I had my storyboards approved, for the most part, by PBC and that lead onto the creation of the animatic. The one issue they had was there was a point in the script where the narrator discusses how the body deals with bile by saying that the body expels it. In my storyboard I showed this by having it drain out of the characters body as if it was filled up like an outline and you'd pulled the plug on it. When I spoke to them, Robert, the big boss go PBC Foundation was worried it wasn't literal enough. We had to discus this because when your body rids itself of bile that bile comes out in your poop so I didn't really want to make it any more literal because that mean that I open it up to either too much information being passed over and grossing children out or too prevent that I inject humour but I feel like that would have appealed to my audience far too much to keep them on topic. Children love poop jokes! So I raised that back as a concern but in addition I also suggested a compromise that would imply that the bile came out in your poop without being any more explicit in the visuals. The sound of a toilet flushing. PROBLEM SOLVED!!<br />
<br />
Ok so here's the animatic. You should be able to see some changes between the storyboards and here. Um it's a really high functioning animatic, and I did only make one because I had figured a lot out at this stage in terms of where stuff was placed on the screen or where they come in from. I also had a lot of help with the timing because of the audio.<br />
<br />
Oh actually side note while I'm talking about the audio, at my meeting they told me they had the rough cut of the audio and were going to edit it before they sent it to us but then Rob asked if we wanted him to just send it to us so we could edit it ourselves. I thought about it before I agreed that yes that would in fact be good because I thought that way we could really keep the handle on the time of the recording that way and we'd know how to edit it and make sure it sounded good. So we took that off there hands.<br />
<br />
Ok so basically what I was saying was I only needed one animatic because of having that help with the timing already in place. It just meant that I was figuring out some of the movements during the transitions. Timings in this animatic worked themselves out pretty quickly so I was more so testing out some animation for the whole thing. I think that's one reason it became such a high functioning animatic because I didn't just really rough keyframes, I did some betweening too so I could really see what was going on because it's long and there's a lot of information to convey and things to get right.<br />
<br />
<b>Here you go -</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzX-kpLTvjV5uih4_rt1qCOECeyV_sah9jJ1JTO0-f_UuTKVDYsMvJpL0lfCsrZlOgppO_Z-xPG35EUvy0X7A' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

I like the way it can entirely chance a story depending on the angle you chose for a shot or the length of time you hold the camera on that scene for. I find it very interesting. Which means that these days I am making more and more storyboards for things because I just enjoy it. I find it really fun. Unfortunately for this one I couldn't really play around with the angles and things too much because it's an educational video and the last thing I wanted was for it to be too confusing. I kind of feel like for this I would stick to pretty front up angles; Long shots, mid shots and close ups. but from flat on because I feel like that helps you see the information in its entirety and avoids confusion. Rather than say doing the same things but having them from high 3/4 degree angles for arts sake is just going to needlessly obscure the information and you'll have to think a bit harder about what you're looking at. Which is not something you want in an educational video. It's detrimental to the cause. So here are my revised storyboards (after the new script):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIhaot3aj7VuwZecU4BW9N_x7PmyEtlI3EswyQbQCD8lSdLPUs-8AGrEDMurAriXqezu4ETVOab1rmJmiw0cJVJYj1Zpt7GayUfvpha3l_wjws-odMgwd1wHVeW56csb_vMlbdJajPJquu/s1600/Storyboard+revised+for+PBC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIhaot3aj7VuwZecU4BW9N_x7PmyEtlI3EswyQbQCD8lSdLPUs-8AGrEDMurAriXqezu4ETVOab1rmJmiw0cJVJYj1Zpt7GayUfvpha3l_wjws-odMgwd1wHVeW56csb_vMlbdJajPJquu/s1600/Storyboard+revised+for+PBC.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
So this above storyboard is the storyboard I took to my client meeting to have approved. I didn't want to treat Rob, Robert and Kelda like they were stupid but I also understand that not everyone understands storyboard layout and I tried to make it as simple as possible for them to understand. Do this one includes none of my decision making. It's the much more polished version of the storyboard. I also at this stage removed the transition scenes because we already covered that concept so they understood it which meant the next stage I really needed to think about it was the animatic stage. Also the text under the first box starts part way through to act as a queue for later on.<br />
<br />
So I made this one by sort of frankensteining the storyboard I was working from myself which had a lot more notes for myself and things to think about and decision making. Because I know if I don't write down why I did that I'll try to change it and then I'll be second guess myself so I always write it down so I know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-BrRzT7bzIi_RXD-TSrK19DZXlUkrzNbA0L6X6scDRpAOrNJV9S1gkUwnYOZzPVkGSEkzzNWVMZdjJFWHh_0Pg0Nyms2ddE4mJY9FXJelogMKr2c4XL5IlJAWub1VUJplnberPrhYlcBI/s1600/Storyboard+003+-+PBC+-+for+my+reference.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-BrRzT7bzIi_RXD-TSrK19DZXlUkrzNbA0L6X6scDRpAOrNJV9S1gkUwnYOZzPVkGSEkzzNWVMZdjJFWHh_0Pg0Nyms2ddE4mJY9FXJelogMKr2c4XL5IlJAWub1VUJplnberPrhYlcBI/s640/Storyboard+003+-+PBC+-+for+my+reference.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiCJd7y0qk85nR9q-qsP_bDSavbAL2r7WoGp4SQTMG6fKiDuQ50iqvsSybAHcoQwDDhnZhhI2ShsQPXl4slDWx-cNvT8GHhTp88QSQ-Ev2lbLnKdqAZm0ULjjtvSCk8pyxcDUkyOtUAUxa/s1600/PBC+Storyboard+003+-+cont.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiCJd7y0qk85nR9q-qsP_bDSavbAL2r7WoGp4SQTMG6fKiDuQ50iqvsSybAHcoQwDDhnZhhI2ShsQPXl4slDWx-cNvT8GHhTp88QSQ-Ev2lbLnKdqAZm0ULjjtvSCk8pyxcDUkyOtUAUxa/s640/PBC+Storyboard+003+-+cont.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I can see I used a lot of arrows to show direction in the first part of this storyboard and then lots of written words for transitions in the second. That wasn't actually deliberate and is actually relatively annoying now I've noticed it... anyway as you can see a lot of my notes on these were on which direction stuff moves across the screen or which way the camera pans during. That's pretty much just to keep myself straight because I'm quite quickly coming to learn that I work the best with a few plates spinning because I can go away and think about other things for a while if I'm stuck or have been working on the same for a long time I can clear my mind of it for a bit. The downside of that is that sometimes the little things slip my mind so I'm getting used to writing them down for myself so that I don't remember halfway through the project and then have to face a tough decision about redoing it or letting it go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To be honest I'm quite proud of this storyboard because I think a lot of it speaks for itself, which I reckon it should do. So I'm pretty happy with how my storyboarding skills are coming along. Compared to what I used to do. I think this last year has really allowed me to figure out each stage of the process' specific uses and work with them. I used to pin far to much on storyboarding and I don't do that now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So in addition to having made a storyboard I made a couple of beat boards to take to my clients to they would understand how I was planning on making certain more complicated to explain scenes work. Plus this gave me the chance to work through some of those scenes and think about them ahead of making the animatic. Meaning I wasn't walking into those scenes too blind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made three of them. Two that I really needed too help me further figure things out and one too polish some edges - I also made that one because it was an element my clients were excited about and I wanted to capitalise on it to keep my clients excited about the work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok so this first beat board is that last one I mentioned there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCc_uo87oxfT_LNfGBj7OixRFwvogE3v619whfQiFiLjxWx4CvLANl1lL0dlY3H4DhIpXD4HVC9ue8eVL1T38-kqmy15bc_SUluKuXQeaU73yK-NVoyuAzLXqCZ39kAiQDUt7_08SKZh-2/s1600/Beat+board+001+-+PBC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCc_uo87oxfT_LNfGBj7OixRFwvogE3v619whfQiFiLjxWx4CvLANl1lL0dlY3H4DhIpXD4HVC9ue8eVL1T38-kqmy15bc_SUluKuXQeaU73yK-NVoyuAzLXqCZ39kAiQDUt7_08SKZh-2/s640/Beat+board+001+-+PBC.jpg" width="608" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Between the main storyboard and this one I tried moving the bodyguard off centre because that's a more appealing composition too look at. So I put him at around 3/8ths of the way across the page. I also thought this would let him swing into his next action a bit better but tbh honest once I drew it out, I wasn't quite convinced. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So you can see me thinking about it above so I'm not going to explain it too much further because there's a lot to get to still. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next board is for a part of the script I had some trouble with storyboarding to begin with because of the many forms treatment could take. I went for something easy to understand in the end though because it's comparable to something I imagine lots of small children have already taken at one point in their lives and that's taking paracetamol. So I went with this pill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA33izjci08KyRinC6j3JJaxZGsAxc6pd9FsuJH6h6do283IHVt7ysy6hRHOviqMGDavTN6s_RcKIkfyKk6GHuy3mV4H_6-7g5njtCgprAui3uyU-qMuFsPNy0z3wCh_nKop2aA0FCdv6p/s1600/beat+board+medicine+-+PBC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA33izjci08KyRinC6j3JJaxZGsAxc6pd9FsuJH6h6do283IHVt7ysy6hRHOviqMGDavTN6s_RcKIkfyKk6GHuy3mV4H_6-7g5njtCgprAui3uyU-qMuFsPNy0z3wCh_nKop2aA0FCdv6p/s640/beat+board+medicine+-+PBC.jpg" width="562" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can see that it's different to the above storyboarding because again I didn't want the character right in the middle because it's not a particularly nice angle to view from. So again I moved the character to the left and had the action play across the whole of the screen. I feel like that flows a lot better than my original storyboard where all the action happened in straight lines in the centre of the screen which wasn't interesting at all!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And finally I boarded out the transition I was most excited about! I remember starting this and being a bit worried about how many transitions I was going to have to come up with and just praying that some kind of pattern or common sense would help me create them and it did. I started to see common elements in the shape being transformed and the one I was transforming into and a lot of the time I ran with those things. When I couldn't see something very easy or was stuck on a boring idea I enlisted Will's help getting the idea ball rolling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnbnlBmoWczcTXT7uaEsUy5Ub2OZ5_3g2agsBfXtsAGouyUDhXkR7CQ2OPPCzOfv3s_XTsEni6Q037qTZEpQMLEtX624XrmxC2PMK-ucAAztF-MUvSJQ8U7GdfHUdX_oStBS4_74JVz0EE/s1600/Beat+Board+-+PBC+-003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnbnlBmoWczcTXT7uaEsUy5Ub2OZ5_3g2agsBfXtsAGouyUDhXkR7CQ2OPPCzOfv3s_XTsEni6Q037qTZEpQMLEtX624XrmxC2PMK-ucAAztF-MUvSJQ8U7GdfHUdX_oStBS4_74JVz0EE/s640/Beat+Board+-+PBC+-003.jpg" width="532" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the first time I'd ever made myself beat boards and if I'm honest I still only slightly understand their use but with some work I think I'll get them. This one explains itself pretty well and I'm really pleased with it. You can see a lot of information in it. The cake falling and the candles getting bigger to accommodate the space before they continue to transform into the child and guardian we see at the bottom - who then throw a ball and it falls off screen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all I think I did a pretty comprehensive stroyboarding job here. There's so many of them and I was constantly editing. So I'm pretty happy at this stage of the process. </div>

I recently found out that people actually read this! Which is exciting! I always just assumed I wrote this for my own deluded ideas of self importance... and you know Jared and Alan, but apparently I'm wrong and I actually do have the occasional reader! (Thanks Laura!)<br />
<br />
So last I told you I had a first draft of what I could kind of assume would be in my scrip when it arrived. Well following that I got the real script...<br />
<br />
I was not pleased.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4VTB3t8-jrEip94wr35A4J1_Cl-tT-7u3b6RMhmyC0OELOWKt6F5bqDkHeNzlcEkj5ZEBRuf02N2LtsJRTJmjn7_-oOlqIgc8qXs70nYavkuBbpMB_aarwwTyH_poQbXEyWmptDRtFdZC/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-22+at+23.28.52.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4VTB3t8-jrEip94wr35A4J1_Cl-tT-7u3b6RMhmyC0OELOWKt6F5bqDkHeNzlcEkj5ZEBRuf02N2LtsJRTJmjn7_-oOlqIgc8qXs70nYavkuBbpMB_aarwwTyH_poQbXEyWmptDRtFdZC/s640/Screen+Shot+2016-04-22+at+23.28.52.png" width="626" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So my focus with this film really was these children we were making them for. Every decision I made was made with them in mind and when I got this new script through I had a lot of issues with them. But I'm sensible, levelheaded and pragmatic so I made a note of them all and sent a quick email to Kelda to ask if we could schedule a meeting to discuss it before we went any further. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let me just go over the issues I had really quick. They basically just come down to the same reason and that is appropriateness for child audience.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Complicated language. - Children aren't going to know what half of these words mean.</li>
<li>Non stimulating visuals. - In addition to not understanding the words there's not a lot of ways for me to graft visuals to them and have the film be stimulating </li>
<li>Too Upfront - far too much of this is too literal for an audience like this. There's a lot of things in here that can be taken out, simplified or worded in a way that means they understand but we don't scare them with what is happening to there parents.</li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I guess these are pretty much the headings of the concerns with the script I had. To be honest it felt like a complete 360 from the taster script they had previously sent me. I understood that they were really concerned with making sure they gave out the correct information to people and didn't become liable for anything but I also knew that for the audience we had this wasn't the most effective way to convey that information. So like I mentioned above we arranged to have a meeting with them just to make sure that we got everything perfect before they started recording the audio.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I didn't rewrite it for them, I didn't dictate or give them specifically wrong words, I went into the meeting with general directions. They wanted our help and they made that clear when they pitched to us that they not only needed an animation from us but also some insight on these kinds of things and that's something I kept in mind here. I didn't want this to become a one way project and although they were paying us to provide them with a service we were also working with them to make this video which meant that our input was important.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The meeting went well, I was a little scared because they brought in the big boss but he just wanted to make sure that things were perfect this time around. We had some conversations about how I thought it would be easier for their age group to understand if there were more visual comparisons in the script that I could draw upon. I also let them know that they jargon didn't have to be so intense but that I could definitely work with some of it and they didn't have to take it all out. Comparison is important. I really benefited from this opportunity to open a dialogue with them in many ways. It was my first chance to voice concerns with clients and deal with them and I'm happy it went well because that means I have a positive and working experience for the next time I have to voice concerns with clients. I actually really liked these clients because they were easy to work with, there was a real process here and I got a chance to properly back and forth with them. </div>

I'm going to put the final scipt in the next post because I'm going to put it in the post with the storyboards.</div>

I am very pleased to report that PBC stuck to their end of the bargain and provided some scripts. They sent along some bullet pointed versions before the final script so we can get thinking about what the final script might contain. Which is fabulous because it keeps the ball rolling on this side!</div>

Here's what they sent me:</div>

I was very pleased when I received this. It was exactly what they promised me. It was to the point but not too intimidating or scary. It said what needed to be said without any of the hugely technical jargon that might confuse children or become boring or be hard to represent in visual imagery. Which were all huge bonus' for me because it left me a huge degree of control over the visuals as they included example visuals they wanted and metaphors they thought would be good. I knew this meant they had kept in mind the huge simplification of the material that was needed. I was feeling pretty positive at this stage. So in order to keep up the workflow I produced a storyboard at this stage to start the thinking process.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can probably tell already, I scrapped this one pretty quick in. Not because I didn't like the things I had in it but because I messed it up a little bit in terms of what I thought would be useful to show my clients. At this stage above I was making the storyboard for me. Jumping from one bullet point of information to another. It wasn't until this stage in the construction of my storyboard that I realised it wasn't going to help Rob, Robert and Kelda understand the film at all. As my entire film hinged on these transitions scenes. I didn't want to assume they knew what I meant when I suggested the images would morph from one into the next. So I started again...</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was pretty excited about this second storyboard because I loved some of the things I had included in it. I wasn't so excited about things like the VCR to DVD converter but it was one of the suggestions PBC had made themselves so to satisfy their needs I included it, at least at this stage. I didn't really feel it was working or that the reference would be clear to 8 - 12 year olds. I do remember videos becoming obsolete halfway through my childhood, so the likelihood of a child of 12 remembering them are remote to say the least. While I'm on the subject of the VCR scene I might as well mention that I found it's transitioning rather difficult. As you can see from the storyboard I simply had it morph from a liver, then following that I didn't even bother! Just another reason I didn't want to include that metaphor. We just couldn't work together. There's a lot of the transitions I am happy with I love the entirety of the run from the sieve to the bodyguard. I wanted to badly to mess around with the idea of the media of the visuals. Which is why I have the character appear physical and 3 dimensional by having drips land on it but then fall over as if it was flat and 2 dimensional. I thought that might be funny and engage children. I also just really liked it as a transition. To be fair to this storyboard a lot of it just felt natural. Elements matched up like waving hands that could just wave themselves away or the potential implied heaviness of the female gender symbol. (honestly I loved that part that's why I made a gif!) Thought it was fun and playful and simple. Exactly what I wanted it to be.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it came to angles here I thought it best to avoid to much camera movement. I wanted to keep the camera still but have the things move and spin around it. I think it maybe helps ground the viewer. A lot of this is really confusing and I don't want to confuse them further. There's sort of a juxtaposition between what they feel in real life and what they will feel in this film I think. The film, much like their life for a small spell, will swirl and move and they'll feel pretty isolated. That's why we're making these films. We don't want them to feel like that and I think that managed to be reflected in the style of movement I've chosen. The camera barely moves if at all. The viewer remains a constant. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't include much colour in this storyboard. I kind of feel like it gets confusing when you're trying to portray that much information to include colour. I at least get lost and since it's me working from them I really can't be getting lost now can I? I did however include colour in places where the colour was necessary to help me tell the story. I didn't feel like the character at the beginning, intended to be of ill health, would be accurately represented if he wasn't green. Green faces have pretty much become synonymous with illness in cartoons. Other than that I like my storyboards black and white. It helps me see clearly. And if I can see it nice and clearly there's a bigger likelihood my clients can too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also took some time to create some concept art and bits and pieces at this stage about some elements I was seeing a bit more vividly because I was excited by them and needed the ideas down on paper. One of them I really took to was the idea of a body guard. a guard of the body but inside the body. But like we know he does not work. And when I first heard this my initial thinking was not "oh because it can't work because it's sick, it was it won't work because it's lazy!" The implications of which I realise suggest that it is partially to blame but i am planning on addressing that, don't worry! Here's that original concept sketch!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I really like this charity they're small, they're excited by what we're doing and I'm looking forward to the project. They're looking for something to describe to the children of the people effected by the condition what it is that the are going through. They were really pretty flexible with it all but we haven't managed to make many inroads into this project yet because those involved have been on annual leave which means we only managed to meet with them the first time a couple of weeks ago. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Before we had gone, however, Abby, Amanda and I had agreed that we should prepare as much as possible before we met them to compensate for the lost time. We agreed between us to take a look at how many films we felt we could make from the information we were trying to convey and we decided on three. This was brilliant because they had also reconsidered the original number they had asked and were now sitting at about three logical films as well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When we attended the first meeting they had asked us to bring along some examples of visualised versions of the symptoms of PBC. I created a few more literal versions to start off with and then moved into some more simplistic linear work. I couldn't help but feel like there was no need to create a metaphorical version of symptoms that have physical attributes, like fatigue because they are evident enough. But symptoms such as swelling and fluid in your stomach are not necessarily obvious.<br />
<br />
They had previously told me they liked the information videos produced by the RSA which are a bit like hand drawn illustrations. While we felt collectively as a group that we wanted to do something a bit more we obviously took their initial stylistic preferences into account;</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G11t6XAIce0&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">RSA LINK</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These films bore me a bit but I think when they asked us to look at these they were more focused on the metaphorical element. But I knew if I was bored by these films then children definitely would be. This got me thinking about the type of films that keep children's attention. Bright colours and exagerated movement. While I am aware this is a not a young young audience. They will be somewhere between 8 and 12, I still think these elements are in play. Just more so joint with the a more complicated narrative. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So the drawings I produced for them look like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In addition I showed them my showreel and they very much liked my digital elements especially one of my 10x20x15's with the moon and the astronaut. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK5jz_fib7Hy2HsRL3Xe24hOlKaEvevMII1av78f9u2f3J2F2hWJRCtagnlyySmsR67aXErXEvPTo1ynIZ1C-h5B9rYozzvsapoDLQtZspMHzHRAYdi4ikobMIOgycGDW6zC08BsZHy4gX/s1600/1969-tumblr.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK5jz_fib7Hy2HsRL3Xe24hOlKaEvevMII1av78f9u2f3J2F2hWJRCtagnlyySmsR67aXErXEvPTo1ynIZ1C-h5B9rYozzvsapoDLQtZspMHzHRAYdi4ikobMIOgycGDW6zC08BsZHy4gX/s320/1969-tumblr.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was very pleased to hear that as that meant all the pieces were falling into place pretty simply. When I say that I mean the image I had build in my head of the kind of film I wanted to make here, that I thought would be successful were being approved. I didn't need to convince them that this was the right decision as they were easily happy with the things I was thinking.<br />
<br />
Drawing on what I was saying before about the colours and the movements I was taking inspiration from things like the oreo advert and the american express adverts when thinking about this film. Because it all works in metaphors I would like it to move nicely from scene to scene because otherwise I am scared there will be a lack of movement within the piece and it could become very boring very quickly so I was looking at films of those styles as references. When I showed them at the meeting on thursday they were excited by the idea and liked the flow of them which was what I was hoping for. So for the moment I have a good direction to head in.</div>

(Vampire wonderfilled oreo advert)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Which just meant that from here we needed the narrative. We have discussed and agreed on a deadline in which to retrieve finalised audio by and until then there will be some backing and frothing between us as we develop material around their developing audio. Our deadline is finalised because they have to take the films to their funding body and begin to get it finalised so that is an absolute so we are all concerned about sticking to this deadline. We will be sent some audio as soon as possible and we can begin on the films from there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the moment the only thing we know for sure about this project is that there will be three films. The themes of which will be;</div>

To begin with I just felt like it. I like making them and this year so far I haven't actually gotten to do any animation itself because I've been to busy in meetings and planning films that the actual making process has alluded me. So I thought if I made one I would get the chance to animate something this year. It was then also pointed out to me that if I handed it in to this years advent competition it would meet the requirements set by this years externality project. So after that it was pretty much settled. Get the christmas card done and in on time for this competition.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's becoming a bit of a pattern for me for my films to be driven quite heavily by style and this film was no exception. When it gets to this time of the year I love some vintage. I love a christmas card that looks like it's from the 60's or the 70's. I think it's a style that lends itself perfectly to the season. It uses soft colours and straight lines and it just shouts christmas to me. I love retro christmas cards. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So one of the first things I did was put together a pinterest board full of pins of various vintage christmas cards;</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/Abimation/animated-christmas-card-2015/" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I love the colours and textures of these cards which I wanted to mimic in this film. I love alternative framing and I've only every used them in one other film. I was inspired by this further as I sat and watched the films that thursday we were invited to the 4th years focus group. He used a lot of alternative frames and it made me realise just how badly I did want to use them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I planned to have this digital card styled very like a real card. A real card with a rough around the edges vintage 60's feel.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPKbhWzd82Fj0Xh0-yMvYYLDoHR1pePeQtRyNAs59Lth4frhp-uQhZkasPdnOJhGrUFNbOyr4mf1VC8t1njzu-92Qv1rPmhxvL9jv8YlsSbZ0XVsU1alq7TGVrGhQq3MHCySsONxuGPnM1/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-12-04+at+15.35.55.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPKbhWzd82Fj0Xh0-yMvYYLDoHR1pePeQtRyNAs59Lth4frhp-uQhZkasPdnOJhGrUFNbOyr4mf1VC8t1njzu-92Qv1rPmhxvL9jv8YlsSbZ0XVsU1alq7TGVrGhQq3MHCySsONxuGPnM1/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-12-04+at+15.35.55.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(still from the beginning of my chrsitmas card)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made sure the whites are much creamier than real whites and all the colours are across the same pallet. It's a very limited colour pallet so I am using pretty much 5 colours. That blue never features again hahaha.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So Jared already knows much of the plot to this card because he helped me out with it when I was stuck. Initially I knew I wanted a shop display and characters packing up for christmas day, all of them going home for christmas. Mainly because I wanted a gingerbread house and gingerbread men in there. I was really feeling those this year. And it seems that they are in this year as well. As I've seen lots of them this year in shops and in adverts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So the plot for this film, thanks Jared for the help, goes that there is this tree in the window of the shop and at the end of the night when the lights are turned off and the shop is closed, the ornaments on the tree come to life and head home for christmas. The snowman and the reindeer both jump from the tree and head home. Following this the gingerbread man tries to dismount the tree and go home as well but finds he is tangled in the tree and can't release himself from it because of his lack of fingers. He becomes upset and eventually is helped down from the tree by the reindeer. Then he can finally go home for christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Really this card to me feels a lot more like a moving illustration but it gave me a chance to stretch an animation muscle I never get to because I could digitally draw this one. Having said that it took me far longer than I thought to teach myself to affectively work in photoshop as I was having some issues. I was following the basics of a youtube tutorial I was sent on how to use photoshops timeline tools. But like is typical of everything mine did not look or work anything like the version in the tutorial and I had to pend a long time trying to figure out how to work the timeline in my version of photoshop. Which unfortunately compromised the end result of my card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Initially I had much bigger plans for this card. I considered having it narrated a bit like the night before christmas but I didn't have the time once I'd figured out the photoshop timeline to record the audio before I could think about animating. Plus I had an idea of breaking the 4th wall with this narrative and in the end I didn't know how to continue the narrative and figuring it out would have taken more time to figure out. So I scrapped that element.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In addition from scene to scene I had intended to have the frames move as if a page was being turned but because of the way my time worked out I couldn't get Mikes help with that which meant that the labour was going to be to intensive for me to continue to consider it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I mean all in all I think the film turned out fine and I'm still glad I made it I just think I haven't quite managed to figure out how much I can achieve in a certain length of time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the end the only thing about it I would definitely change is there is a scene where the gingerbread man is looking down at his hands because he can't get off the tree. I don't think it's obvious enough and if I could remake the film I would cut in a longshot of him looking at his hands as well as his closeup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway here's the final film!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
I showed them my idea and they very much liked it. To begin with they had very few issues. They only wished for the character at the bar that had a stop sign next to him already to be removed from the film because they felt sorry for him and they didn't want the message to be if someone has HIV you shouldn't be sleeping with them because that's wrong. And I didn't realise you could look at it like that before so I agreed to remove his character because you know that's not the right vibe at all! Like I may have mentioned a thousand times before with this project Gay Man's Health are all about blatentness and one of the things included with this is an acknowledgement that if you have HIV your life is not over and as long as you are careful then no doors are closed to you. So from this point onwards I am going to be very careful to avoid singling out anyone who has HIV. Really what we are going for here is an awareness thing. Like it doesn't matter what your results are just that you know them in the first place. Gay man's health can help with things once you know what's going on but if you don't know that's when you're at risk. So I feel a little clearer on that issue now that the meeting has happened.<br />
<br />
Slowly as the meeting progressed and we'd gone through the rest of the films we kept being drawn back to mine. Something about it wasn't right. The Alistairs began to realise that many of the same films covered similar subject matter and as they stood the films being made were overlapping each other. Which they decided were fine but in the end we decided that my film was better suited to a different more generic sexual health message rather than the current message "Get Tested' which was specifically looking at HIV. It was felt that the message I was sending was more generic and they they would have liked something more specific relating to HIV for the HIV film. After further discussion they had decided that they wanted a film that would remove the stigma surrounding HIV as people tend to only focus on the negative. While they didn't want to glorify HIV they also didn't want people who had been diagnosed with it to feel like there were huge sections of their life closed of to them. Once this decision was made it was simple enough for me to hand my initial message of "Get Tested" Over to Shannon who had yet to begin work on her final film which was the message "Go to A Clinic" Which was more of a generic sexual health message. They were pleased with this outcome because they very much liked my film and wanted to keep it if possible.<br />
<br />
So that was that settled. I will be making some minor adjustments to my film to make it suitable to any sexual health issues and Shannon would be making a more specific HIV film.<br />
<br />
This is about as much work as I have done on they film at the moment. My nest steps will be to revise my storyboard and take a better look at the shots I am using to tell the story and make sure I have picked the most suitable angles before I move on to the animatic.<br />
<br />
I have informed Alistair on our operation progress from this point so he knows what to be expecting the next time we meet him. I will be emailing him a revised storyboard before I continue onto the animatic because it is easier for him to check the story is working in its basic from while it is a storyboard even if I will probably be making several animatics anyway. So that's it for gay man's health just now because of several other commitments I've had since the last meeting.<br />
<br />
Since then I've been very busy with what actually feels like nothing but I have actually not stopped. I am completely knackered!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12584868584387079103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203699290828734728.post-23189039634168920942015-12-02T07:35:00.001-08:002016-04-22T13:27:03.832-07:00Gay Man's Health - The StorySo the story for my Gay Man's Health film goes as follows -<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Men are in club</li>
<li>Two of them are talking about hooking up</li>
<li>One displays his tick alerting the other they are HIV negative</li>
<li>The other displays a ? telling the other that he doesn't know what his HIV status is.</li>
<li>The first looks concerned and displays some math that says a tick + a ? = (scribbles)</li>
<li>The first one then looks upset and asks why a tick + a ? can't = <3 </li>
<li>To which the first one flat out tells him it can't by using a stop sign</li>
<li>We then pan to the next set of characters who are having the same conversation but things are going well for them.</li>
<li>Both characters display their ticks and then a love heart appears over their head that says they are a ok to move forward.</li>
<li>panning again we join a character moving through the space scanning the area for someone he's interested in. He moves past a character who already knows his HIV status is bad and ignores him</li>
<li>And then another who has a "?" to display</li>
<li>He then passes a character sitting at the bar looking rather distraught. We then stay with this character for some time.</li>
<li>He is staring down at his phone expectantly - the phone displaying a loading style "..."</li>
<li>He then displays a very distressed scribble telling us that he thinks his night is ruined and he should maybe just go home because</li>
<li>but then an envelop appears on his screen telling him he has mail</li>
<li>He opens the mail and his demeanour changes entirely he's happier now and much more confidant. </li>
<li>He signals to the bar man and then gestures off screen</li>
<li>We then see the man from early resting up against the opposite side of the bar.</li>
<li>A drink slides into screen with him and he accepts it gesturing a thank you to the first man</li>
<li>The first man then flashes him his tick and the second man returns it</li>
<li>They both then leave together after confirming a <3</li>
<li>The slogan "you're sexual health status is important"</li>
<li>"to both you and to others"</li>
<li>"make sure you know what it is"</li>
<li>"GMH" appears</li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Storyboard)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like I mentioned before this storyboard was born out of no where this was completely organic and I actually love so many things about it. I like that I didn't let myself think to hard about it to begin with because I feel like I captured the completely organic nature of flirting quite well. I really liked the style of the characters. They're basic level of design allows them to be very expressive. With the message of the film being very obvious as to state it at the end I feel like overly complicated characters aren't going to take a lot of unnecessary time to create and animate. They don't have to be that complicated so why make them that way?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In term of the camera shots I wanted to make this film quite stylised which is why I chose lintless characters (I think they're really soft and with the background I think it clashes less) and I picked that bright pink and purple gradient background. I love working with bold colours, it's very me. I think they grab your attention and as this film is most likely to be watched on phones and tablets then I want to make sure you can really see what is going on with the characters. So I took a screenshot of my concept art imbedded in this site to see how the characters were holding up on a device screen and here it is:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxqSKFqFNNQqFyq1kTg6L5Twg_Ro7NzLtmMm5Ig0Rqz_5Sc8ru2-4Hz9-lZomNeFqNLgs7waFH3tlwyA-5fI4tHld_piQoQdsuvPGUvZH_dzFHitIi6_D7jtCZsSv7-jvuRPMIePdgDEUV/s1600/on+a+phone.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxqSKFqFNNQqFyq1kTg6L5Twg_Ro7NzLtmMm5Ig0Rqz_5Sc8ru2-4Hz9-lZomNeFqNLgs7waFH3tlwyA-5fI4tHld_piQoQdsuvPGUvZH_dzFHitIi6_D7jtCZsSv7-jvuRPMIePdgDEUV/s320/on+a+phone.PNG" width="179" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(screenshot from my phone)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Everything was entirely legible and I could see the legs and arms against the background very clearly. Which I was worried about. So that was great! I made the character blue because that's the colour that gay man's health are. So that's really it on character design just now. Sorry it's a bit all over the place haha. I was making decisions because of other influences and things so it made the narrative here a bit all over the place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok so heading back to the story. I quite like it for a first storyboard. I think it got all the points down. I did spend a few days on it and it developed along the way so although it's a first storyboard it's a refined storyboard. I felt like once I had characters drawn that had expressions and real character to them, that they knew what they were doing and it was driving me. Where as before I really did have no idea what I was doing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think to be honest a lot of this has a boy who turned yellow influence. Jared played it to an audience of prospectus students at an open day one day early this year and it's been playing in the back of my mind ever since. I love video games, especially the quirky ones. And I felt like the boy who turned yellow had a real video game vibe about it. Plus a quirky cuteness and I think that is featuring quite highly in the development of this film. The characters are styled part way between them and the work of Jotaka who's an illustrator I really love.</div>

I dunno what to tell you guys I love playing up the nose on my characters!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've derailed a little bit but pulling us back to looking at the story. I feel like the ticks and the stops and the hearts are like checkpoints you need to reach in order to go all the way, like when you used to play an old crash bandicoot game and you'd jump on a checkpoint box and some confetti would go off and things. I feel like it's got that kind of vibe. Or if it doesn't yet that's something I'd like to bring to it because I want it to still feel fun. I want people who are watching it to not feel turned off by the idea of checking their partner or their own sexual health status before they can get anywhere. I can imagine it's a bit of a mood ruiner but it's import and and if I can push the point that it doesn't have to ruin your night and that it can still be fun then I think the film would have all the elements then that I want it too. That's why I like this game element in this film. It's a bit fun and reminds you that that's what this is meant to be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last thing I wanted to do with this film was guilt anyone or make anyone feel scared or isolated and I feel like my chosen narrative does that.</div>

It was after my last hand in so I don't know if I mentioned it. But at the end of the year last year I helped a 4th year intermedia student who wanted to make a film about the seedier side of online dating if you're a gay man. The film sort of had this costume element and included a large Jim Henson style puppet. Scott needed to be behind the camera to work the puppet and as needed a filming crew and an editing team so I, along with Tyler from the year beneath worked on this project for him. It was fun and different and in the end we ended up with a film credit and a good film so I was dead pleased.<br />
<br />
I get on really well with Scott and I love his company so when he told me he was getting to exhibit the works and had been commissioned to make two more se he had a set of films I was more than happy to help him in any way he needed. That meant that when he asked me to help him edit the first and create a montage of a few different types of sourced materials for the second I was more than willing.<br />
<br />
These films are definitely more of an edit job but considering that is a skill I am looking to build up and learn into I am not at all complaining about the lack of animation and drawing involved. I feel like I myself am definitely a film maker rather than an artist who makes films and in that regards I am always excited by the filmic elements and excited to learn and pursue them in many ways. I pretty much live and breath film.<br />
<br />
The first film is entirely an edit job so for me it will be an exercise in pacing. Something I think I definitely need to build on. I noticed I had quite a few issues with the pacing of this years Christmas card which I will move on to discussing shortly. In this way I will be focusing on taking that away from this film as there are very few creative decisions for me to make within this film.<br />
<br />
The second film however is a film that centres more around drugs. The character in this film is narrating about their life and their decisions while a montage plays on screen. The montage will include lots of elements of this lifestyle. Your typical sex, drugs and rock and roll. So I will be sourcing or creating footage of parties, drugs and taking them and (thanks to scott for sourcing it) some gay porn. I will be making this montage. Which can either involve or not involve animation in some form. More so time lapses and time manipulation of footage than your traditional animation however there is a small element of it there. I'm looking forward to doing something where I can entirely focus on the filmic elements. Such as what kind of message you're being sent when you hear this narrative and knowing what images I should put against them. It should be a nice calming break from all the animation related things I'm doing this semester. To be able to turn it off and look at real people for a little while. (Not that I'm ever complaining about animation!)<br />
<br />
So while I haven't began any direct work on these yet I helped film the beginning and end sections to the later film and I now have all the material to begin working on them. I feel I will do the bulk of the work in my holidays as I will be heading out with a camcorder to film some club scenes and things while I have the time over my holidays.<br />
<br />
I have spoken quite extensively with Scott about the copyright concerns with some of the things we are working with as we are not able to film a lot of it ourselves and we have put procedures for me to follow in place for ensuring that we don't run into any trouble at any point during the film. We'll be blurring a lot of the footage we use and distorting it from the originals in order to make it look significantly different. In addition all the large crowd scenes will be careful shot so that you can't see anyones faces.<br />
<br />
Scott has pretty much thought about everything and I'll be cracking on with this one as soon as the holiday has begun!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12584868584387079103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2203699290828734728.post-17771372066255284542015-12-01T14:44:00.001-08:002016-04-22T13:27:32.767-07:00Gay man's health - Resolving the problemOk so every film we're asked to make has an issue to work around. For this animation the obvious one is that I need to entice people to see get a HIV test but in addition I had to do that convincingly without sound. The last troublesome element to this project was that Alistair had asked for these to be short 45 to 60 seconds long each and I really didn't want to make that all text so you would understand because that would leave me very little room to do anything I wanted to do. I really didn't just want to animate text because to me it seems flat and while it can be quirky and fun in places it's not really what I want to make and I don't think I could make them an animation they were happy with if I made it like that. So I had to take some time to think about how to create a narrative that didn't need text or audio in order to be understood. The difficulty with this is many other information videos such as these come with narratives over the top so I had very little reference material to draw on.<br />
<br />
For a while I considered making it a bit like one of those weird add campaigns where you aren't entirely sure what it is that's being advertised until right at the end. Michael pointed me in the direction of an amazing music video that had the style I was going for in mind and while I considered it I began to feel that while I wanted to animate something like this at some stage it was entirely wrong for an information campaign. When really a video like that would be all about making you guess what it was for and the novelty in it being that it's clever at the end, I really don't think that it's correct when you want to encourage people to use a service. Maybe if you want them to buy a product but informing them on a service it doesn't really make for a good choice. So I quite quickly decided not to follow this route any further. Bellow is the music video Michael sent me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TuJqUvBj4rE/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TuJqUvBj4rE?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Music video - When I was Done Dying - Dan Deacon)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
So once I had completely abandoned any idea I had in my head I could really get thinking about what it was this project needed to be effective. By this stage in the process I had no ideas left in my head that could sway my decision. The only thing I had left knocking around in my head was the colour pallet Laura had drawn up as a rough guide. Because we had all decided to keep things cohesive we would agree to a set of colours. Primarily blue because of the gay mans health symbol but then also other colours of the same tone as the gay mans health blue. So this was the only thing I had running through my mind at this stage of the process. And if I'm honest I think this blankness really helped me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjg8g6RlSDb9JlGoeTFImjiexm2SEA_d04Vglj-dIQBtmWrG-oSS5ZjgB6QhzyqbWvUC9r1NiWKu8ecl_o_vPV0Vcf4SAZ1lH5XGUZfK3hSj1W7PbyzRuUNPDOHEytZnKkf4GHufc7WLFM/s1600/colour+scheme+for+gay+man%2527s+health.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjg8g6RlSDb9JlGoeTFImjiexm2SEA_d04Vglj-dIQBtmWrG-oSS5ZjgB6QhzyqbWvUC9r1NiWKu8ecl_o_vPV0Vcf4SAZ1lH5XGUZfK3hSj1W7PbyzRuUNPDOHEytZnKkf4GHufc7WLFM/s320/colour+scheme+for+gay+man%2527s+health.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Colour pallet Laura put together)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
It meant that I took a step back and thought about how else we communicate information when we don't use words. So I started looking at symbolism and visual linguistics. I mean you automatically know what the little green man on the traffic lights means when you see him. So I was thinking about your typical symbolism when it struck me that this is all it needs to be. It's a campaign about safe sexual health and going to a clinic to find these things out. So I thought why does it need to be any more complicated than black and white? Ticks and crosses or ticks and stop signs or something that says yes and something that says no. So I started looking at making my characters speech visual. So you could see and interoperate their conversations without having to hear them. Working on this principle I began to design some characters. I have to admit I didn't do an awful lot of character development just yet. But at the moment I'm happy with my second character idea. Ok so below is the first idea I had that I drew up just to try out something different but he ended up looking to clean cut and sweet for this type of animation. Really I needed a character who had more edge to him. Rougher and who comes across as having more questionable morals who we would believe could make either decision regarding the types of characters he chooses to engage with but would hope would make a good decision.<br />
<br />

The thing about gay man's health is that they don't discriminate about who you have sex with and under what circumstances you have sex just as long as you're safe while you do it, or if you're not, that you get the right help afterwards. And I wanted that non-discriminatory feel to come across. I feel like this character gives off to much of a goody-two shoes vibe that was just not right for this film. Having said that I love his style so that was something I kept with me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Ok I haven't finalised the character design yet but there's something I like about the designs I used when I was storyboarding the film. I decided to just jump straight in with the storyboard eventually. I just thought that if I didn't get something down I wouldn't ever start. I was stuck trying to come up with the right idea, or indeed any, before I started. Then I thought you know what if I don't put pen to paper and start the create process I never will. So I started and the character design just came. I might tweak them but as a concept the characters are simple and none derogatory. They are actually barely recognisable as a gender but none the less I think they are sweet and they get the point across. They aren't discriminatory and therefor they do their job in the film. They are men and they aren't stereotypical or judgemental. I like that about them.<br />
<br />
So beneath is a concept art that describes the feel of the film that I made after I storyboarded it. It shows the concept of these speech bubbles with yes and no in them that I mentioned before as the way I would be communicating the ideas without words or speech. Which I will go more into in the next post where I cover the story, It's sort of difficult to explain the character and the story separately because they go in tandem.<br />

I know mine is always "Urgh". So you can imagine that feeling's a lot worse when it's a sexual issue you need checked out.<br />
<br />
So why is it that every single video out there that encourages you to get a sexual health check up a negative one? Honestly I have no idea. You catch a lot more bees with honey than with vinegar my friend. And instantly this became the path I didn't want to walk down. I'm pretty much one of those people that when you tell them not to push that big red button, is gonna push that big red button. I frequently need something to push against. And when I see a big open space that no ones using guess who's setting up shop? That's right it's me. Besides do you honestly think people are going to be shamed into sexual health check ups? Because I don't. I don't think you would get me to have one if you were like "oh but you might give that guy over there HIV" I'd be all like "ppft, if I had it which I don't!" And I'd sass you. But if you said to me "Look you aint getting none till you do because aint no one gonna touch ya and you are gonna regret it hugely when things start falling off" (now ok none of that sounds anything like me but it's just an example. I am also aware that things falling off is not how STI's work but just bear with me here.) A big part of what appeals to me about gay man's health is that they never seen to shy away from the truth about these things. They don't pretend that every guy that walks through their doors or that reads their leaflets is having sex with a boyfriend. They understand how modern relationships work and how modern sex works. Which is something I wanted to keep in mind as I made this film. That it does not matter who you are hooking up with or how often or where as long as you are safe. They have this humour about them and they way they are just straight up about sex. I like that and the last film I want to give them is something formulaic, informational, bland and boring. So I took the entirely opposite angle to this one and said if you want to have you need to know. If you want to get into someones pants, you better know what's lurking in your own first! A sort of positive incentive to keep yourself in good health.<br />
<br />
Here are a few examples of films that I don't think cut it in terms of either keeping the viewers attention for a particularly long time or enticing them to get a check up:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
oh yawn another diagram of the penis great just what I wanted.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just don't believe that the reason people don't get tested is because of their lack of knowledge on the subject. It's more so their lack of responsibility (especially in the young) if it's not obviously going to affect them then they aren't bothered. So further explanation isn't going to work</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not actually going to put any more in because I don't want you to suffer through the same torture I did while watching several poorly scripted education videos. Either with terrible actors or poor synchronisation with the animated characters. Oh god were they bad. At the end of the day I don't see why just because we're trying to send a message it has to be a terrible film. I really really don't. Do not get it one bit! And honestly I don't see why someone hasn't put there foot down about this before. Oh no wait they have!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Netherlands is the governing body I have to thank for throwing me a bone amongst the countless crappy films, with their Be Sexy, Be Smart campaign. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love this video. It's not patronising, it's still informative and it's a little humorous without making light of the situation. It hit the nail on the head with this one. So This was the only positive influence I have going into this project. And it's animated to boot!</div>

<b>But then we get to the problem</b></div>

Alistair would prefer if none of our films had a non - digetic narrative. He thinks because of the platform he wants to play them on it would be better if you could also watch them on the go and you are far more likely to do so if you don't need to have the sound on to understand things. That presented me with an extra problem that made a lot of the videos I had watched difficult to imitate or to draw from because all of them are driven by non-digetic narratives. </div>
